Extra task - Lighting Research

Extra Task - Weather on Filming Days

The weather situation has changed since we last looked. There is now a slight chance of rain when shooting which we will have to take into account when filming with the drum kit outside and with the   drone we may be able to use.

Extra Task - SD Card Research

We asked other media groups about the sizes of SD cards they used. Reece Chambers used a 32 gb SD when filming in 4K. We will film in HD as the upload time on 4K footage is extreme. So a 32 gb SD will be sufficient.

Task 22 - Creating a Band Logo

Here are a group of artist and band logos I have collected over the internet. These are some of the most iconic music logos and font styles in the world and are so remember for their simplicity and their eye catching design. they often use very little colour to keep them basic and they also use flat colour, i will take his into consideration when i am making my band logo.

This is the first font that I chose for my band logo, from a website called DaFont. I liked this font as it matches the band gene in terms of it being quiet edgy and that its really close to being a clean cut average font, however due to it being tilted and slightly worn it stands out more. This font looks like it was made to look like a sketch, in terms of it being quite rough and not completely finished.

The next font I found under the horror theme on the same website. I liked this font as it was too quite edgy and thought there was lots of things i could do with this logo when incorporating it with a logo. However it didn't match the genre very well so it will be unlikely that i use it. I also relate this font to slashes or claw marks, which also supports the reason for why this logo doesn't match the genre.

This font, like the first one as it is quite edgy and extremely close to being a normal/ basic font. However like the band it has a slight twist to it where it follows the same shape and structure of something normal, however it is slightly worn and in some parts looks uncontrollable, changing the hight of the font.

This is the final font that I found and it reminds me of bones or icicles so already suited the band name. This logo suits the genre well and also isn't similar to any of the other two so stands out more.

Above are is the flame from the beginning outline to the final design. Firstly I drew the flame outline using adobe illustrator using the pen tool, this allowed me to draw curved lines with ease giving a clean cut finish and realistic fire image. The second design i made using adobe photoshop where I used the gradient tool and two flame like colours (orange and red), I also tried it using ice them colours. I then tested it from red to blue, but finally decided to use a combination of the second and third design.

Here I have added the font that i chose from the selection earlier, i have tried it with both black font and also reds and blues. to make the coloured font stand out more i have added a thin outer glow to give it a black outline. I think I will use the logo on the left for my final design however my decid=sion could change throughout the digipak design process.

Task 19 - Fashion and props planning

Seeing as the song Stressed Out is not an extremely upbeat song and our music videos narrative will be a life reflecting story our props and clothes have to express this. This is why I believe dark clothing is suitable to use in many of the scene. For example black jeans and dark coats will be used in scenes where the characters are clearly visible with high key lighting. Dark colours for example black can connote death and disappear which would be effective in passing our narratives message. Whilst using dark colours in low key lighting can be effective, it can also make for poor quality footage where it is hard to visualise what is happening in the narrative. This is why in indoor potentially darker scenes more vibrantly coloured clothing will be used. I think that if we use this format we have a good range of changes and if we edit and shoot correctly we will create a fluent narrative that is consistent. It is important to think of this and plan it when shooting because the clothing needs to be consistent in narrative scenes for the plot to carry and to be fluent.

Task 17 - lyric Analysis

There are few lyrics in this song as many are the repeated chorus which is sung 3 times. This is common as the main part of the song is often considered to be the chorus as it is the most catchy. There are parts of the video which we will illustrate with the song for example when he says "turn back time" we are thinking of using shots which are rewinded which can be considered amplifying the song. The slow motion which we have also practiced we may use. Some parts of the song without lyrics are quite slow tempo so we may use shots such as this here.

From looking and analysing the lyrics of the song we have discovered that the artist is talking about his younger years. He talks about the carelessness of childhood and the problems that come along with adulthood (it didn't meet his expectations). A lot of the lyrics involve his brother and so it suggests that as adults they no longer have such a close bond. some of the lyrics themselves gave us ideas about how we would shoot and present what he is saying.  From this we started to get some sort of story-ling for the narrative. Some of the suggestions we have are; An old man looking back, two brothers looking back and a young man dealing with the stresses of adult life.

Task 15 - Artist, Video, Lyrics, Permission

Post 1:

Tweet One Pilots - Stressed Out:

I wish I found some better sounds no one's ever heard
I wish I had a better voice that sang some better words
I wish I found some chords in an order that is new
I wish I didn't have to rhyme every time I sang
I was told when I get older all my fears would shrink
But now I'm insecure and I care what people think
My name's Blurryface and I care what you think
My name's Blurryface and I care what you think
Wish we could turn back time, to the good old days
When our momma sang us to sleep but now we're stressed out
Wish we could turn back time, to the good old days
When our momma sang us to sleep but now we're stressed out
We're stressed out
Sometimes a certain smell will take me back to when I was young
How come I'm never able to identify where it's coming from
I'd make a candle out of it if I ever found it
Try to sell it, never sell out of it, I'd probably only sell one
It'd be to my brother, 'cause we have the same nose
Same clothes homegrown a stone's throw from a creek we used to roam
But it would remind us of when nothing really mattered
Out of student loans and tree-house homes we all would take the latter
My name's Blurryface and I care what you think
My name's Blurryface and I care what you think
Wish we could turn back time, to the good old days
When our momma sang us to sleep but now we're stressed out
Wish we could turn back time, to the good old days
When our momma sang us to sleep but now we're stressed out
We used to play pretend, give each other different names
We would build a rocket ship and then we'd fly it far away
Used to dream of outer space but now they're laughing at our face
Saying, "Wake up, you need to make money"
Yeah
We used to play pretend, give each other different names
We would build a rocket ship and then we'd fly it far away
Used to dream of outer space but now they're laughing at our face
Saying, "Wake up, you need to make money"
Yeah
Wish we could turn back time, to the good old days
When our momma sang us to sleep but now we're stressed out
Wish we could turn back time, to the good old days
When our momma sang us to sleep but now we're stressed out
Used to play pretend, used to play pretend, bunny
We used to play pretend, wake up, you need the money
Used to play pretend, used to play pretend, bunny
We used to play pretend, wake up, you need the money
We used to play pretend, give each other different names
We would build a rocket ship and then we'd fly it far away
Used to dream of outer space but now they're laughing at our face
Saying, "Wake up, you need to make money"
Yeah

Task 13 - Advanced Editing Techniques

Here we filmed two different shots, the first of which our actor jumped on the ground, the second jumping on a chair. Both shots were filmed on a tripod so there was no camera movement and no background difference between the two shots. we edited it to seem as if the chair appeared as the actor landed the first jump. We could of improved the cut timing by filming a few different jumps and matching the two that suited best together.

In this advanced editing we also had two shots, however this advanced editing didn't work as well. The first shot is of a nearly empty bottle being flipped, this quickly cuts to a shot of a full bottle being dropped from off camera onto the table. The problem we encountered with this is that you can't see that the bottle in the first shot is almost empty, and due to the editing between shots matching up well it doesn't seem like anything has been edited. To improve this we could have maybe filmed a still shot  of the original bottle and the actor picking it up before flipping it.

Task 12 - Photo Shoot and Edit for a Digipak

Here I used an iPhone to take a burst photo of around 40 pictures of Jake throwing a chair. I uploaded these photos and chose three that had a reasonable distance between them. With these I took them into photoshop and edited them, by layering them and changing the 2nd and 3rd layers to a slightly lower opacity of around 50, this allowed the layers below it to be seen through. I then went on to adjust the hue and saturation of the top layer o make it a slightly darker tone of the original colours.

Task 7 - Music Video Analysis

Task 1:

Task 2:

The music video for she's so lovely by  scouting for girls is performance and narrative based. However the performance is derogatory towards woman as the lead singer idolises her and talks about her appearance, making it sound like that's the only good thing about women (their appearance). In this clip we can see how he objectifies her talking about her biting her lip and shaking her hips, to make this worse she supports the lyrics in the narrative by acting them out. This music video differs from others as it sexualises women, this would be looked down by lots of people as people strongly believe in equality.

This music video features a world renowned Actor who's has featured in big blockbuster movies. Despite this he is used in a comical sense and takes away from his credibility. Thesis due to what he does throughout the video (dancing). the lyrics he dances to are about a weapon of choice, so the narrative strongly repels from the lyrics, also the type of dancing he is doing doesn't represent the lyrics and the story they are trying to tell very well. This music video is completely narrative based and doesn't feature any form of a performance from the artist.

Task 3:

Task 4:

Twenty One Pilots - Stressed Out

The lead singers outfit consists of black and red clothing, red items are the accessories e.g. Bag and hat and his base clothes are black. His tricycle is black and red and so are the cars in the background, this could be a links to things that are a result of stress, black for depression and red for anger. During the performance there is always a person in the background on their headphones, this is because they are listening to the music on their iPods, however the actual band is in their rooms as a part of the narrative, this is because the lyrics are supposed to be from their prospective. 4 different locations throughout the music video cuts between each four, makes it seem as if the narrative is a part of the performance. Music and singing cuts out while two characters do a special handshake, making this the only sound. Song comes back in after handshake more upbeat than previously. Now with drums and singing. Towards the end of the song, the lead singer’s voice is altered to be deeper to set the mood of the song. Full body tracking shot as lead singer rides tricycle down the road. Transition from narrative to performance through the doorway. Medium close up shots on lead in singer as he sings the chorus, each. Time he does he takes of his hat.

Task 6 - Analysis of Student Videos and Digipaks

https://youtu.be/mkJXibuJYF0

What works well? - The combination of narrative and lip syncing is evenly balanced and allows the narrative to portray an image for the story the lyrics are telling. Also the use of shots between narrative and lip syncing to fill space shows a wide variety of knowledge and skill, for example close ups and time lapses. The location of the lip syncing changes to various others makes the video more interesting and keeps viewers attention.

What doesn't work well? - On some shots the lip syncing is slightly out of time with the music which takes away from the sense of realism. The typography used for the song title is quite plain and doesn't match or express the genre well.

Is the location and clothing appropriate?- The location isn't always visible, it looks like a village and the characters are teenagers, so is slightly appropriate, other location that could have been used is a school however could make the narrative cliché. The appearance of the person being bullied/ beat up represents that of a nerd or someone who tries hard and cares about their looks (dresses smartly). The people beating up the other kid are seen wearing track suits and that of what someone athletic would wear, however in this they are portraying that of someone who is a “chav” or unintelligible and often brakes rules. As the person being bullied is training he is seen wearing training/ boxing gear which matches his actions, from these outfit choices we can see the lengths the group went to make sure there music video was an  accurate representation of what it would look like if it truly occurred.

Have the correct camera angles and codes and conventions been used?- They use a wide variety of camera angles including low angle and high angle to show strength and weakness in different characters and seen as the narrative is about bullying these camera angles work perfectly.

Is it a creative video? - I feel that the video is quite creative as it basis the narrative on the lyrics. The narrative is almost used in a way of flashbacks to the mistakes the singer has made in the past, after each flash back a slow pan camera shot is used in varying locations show the singer lip syncing but we can see the distress in his facial expressions towards the mistakes he has made.

Does the narrative element work with the performance of the artist/ band? - The narrative works perfectly with the artists performance, the performance almost seems a part of the narrative as you can see through his facial emotions the feelings he has towards the mistakes he has made shown in the narrative.

https://youtu.be/7qXwFqQK8IY

What works well? - The idea of him writing the song during the narrative is unique but creative. The performance of the artist alongside of why he wrote the song breaks up the narrative and allows for the music video to portray a strong story. They use average length shots and make sure the video is not fast paced, matches the speed and genre of the song. The black and white filter used to make the shot softer and makes what's happening the bigger focus point, rather than the surroundings.

What doesn't work well? - The lip syncing and piano playing is often out of time and is always the same shot in a field, this could be changed a few times throughout and would have made it a more interesting video. The narrative with the homeless man doesn't make much sense and a link between the characters could have been clearer.

Is the location and clothing appropriate? - The clothing is suitable, as the homeless man is wearing tracksuit bottoms, a worn jacket and a hat, which you would usually see someone on the streets wearing due the low temperatures at night, this makes the video appear more realistic. The location of the character is also accurate as homeless people are commonly found in highly populated areas as they are more likely to get things from other citizens.

Have the correct camera angles and codes and conventions been used? - There were a wide variety of camera angles used, however none had a specific use like the previous music video, they were most likely used to show their wide variety of skill. Close ups were used most effectively to allow viewers to see the characters true facial emotions.

Is it a creative video? - The video is quite creative as the narrative shows the artist writing and testing the song that they are performing during the video.

Does the narrative element work with the performance of the artist/ band? - The performance of the artist is mostly just a still shot of them in a field and the narrative was them writing the song and visiting a homeless man repeatedly, this isn't a very strong link and doesn't work with each other well. However the artist is singing about the homeless man so there is some connection between the two. This could be improved by the artist singing in the location the homeless man is in, to make the connection clearer.

https://youtu.be/q3MNLmzPFHU

What works well? - They use a wide variety of camera angles to gives a broader image of the setting the video is shot in, they also use filter to give it more detail and to show their skill with editing.

What doesn't work well? - There isn't really a narrative to the music video, more of a performance, which isn't structured very well, just a bunch off shots put together. The camera quality also wasn't very good and made the whole video a lower standard.

Is the location and clothing appropriate?- the location matches the song (parklike) as they are in singing in a park, however this is a poor reason for the location link. The costume also matches the genre of the music and is similar to that of the band. The outfits are smart but dark tones to show that the band is slightly edgy and unique.

Have the correct camera angles and codes and conventions been used?- They use a wide variety of camera angles to give  clear idea of the area the music video is shot. they also use filters effectively over musical instruments, this makes it a more interesting shot and keeps viewers attention swell as showing some editing techniques.

Is it a creative video? - Not really, the location is based on the title of the song, meaning not much thought has gone into it. also the performance on screen is just the band lip singing and hoping in and out of shot.

Does the narrative element work with the performance of the artist/ band? - There isn't really much narrative, however some shots they act out the lyrics.

Task 4 - Digipak Advert Analysis

From this task I have learnt how Digipaks are promoted through using posters for advertisment. Digipak adverts are extremely similar no matter what genre they are promoting. Common themes include big bold font for artist name at the bottom or top of the page and a large image taking most of the page in the centre to draw viewers attention. Adverts often use lots of informative text but can often be boring to look at, and seen as these are advertising an album there is very little text needed making them extremely effective. These bands/ artists advertisement also follow a common colour scheme and font through out all of their products, for example Coldplay use the colour spectrum throughout and use a fine but large font on everything. These are also accompanied by an image. This technique makes the advertisement memorable and easily recognisable.

Task 3 - Analysis of Digipaks

Learning Comment:

From this I learned the use of a digipak and how it differs from a jewel case, and the advantages of using one instead of the other. I found that they look like more work has gone into them making them look a lot more professional, they are also eco friendly as thy can be recycled and the production of them doesn't require huge machinery. Although they have their advantages digipaks aren't as strong as jewel cases, so are more likely t get damaged.  I have also learned things like who would buy a digipak, what they offer to customers and the prices they are sold at, which is relativley close to that of a jewel case. This will allow me to design my digipak to be aesthetically pleasing as well as something practical that stands out and alternative for the customers.

Task 2 - Analysis of Music Websites

Learning Comment:

From this I learned the importance of a website to advertise and promote an artist or album and the sorts of things that are most commonly used on the homepage. I have also learned the types of fonts to consider when trying to suit my website to the genre of music. I will also have to relate the imagery to the artist and the types of songs they produce as artists websites colour scheme and font style often portray the genre of music they produce, for example Of Mice and Men use quite a dull colour scheme with quite dark/ mysterious imagery to match their genre of alternative metal. This will allow me to produce a high standard professional website that would stand out, yet follow the common layout of a website. Things to include in my artists website; artists name, album/ previous music, music videos, photography of band or artist, social media account details and dates for upcoming events e.g. tours or concerts.

Task 1 - History of music videos

Learning comment:

From this I learned how music videos have evolved from standard performances, to a story relating to the lyrics. I've also learned that in previous years the editing styles were quite slow paced, with very little on the screen, layers used to make it less dull and hand held came movement. However the more recent music videos incorporate lots of different angle shots, with fast cuts to go with the energy and beat of the song. This change may have occurred due to the change in more common music being a lot faster and upbeat. This will allow me to have a better understanding of the sort of music video I should produce for the genre of music i will choose. Things to consider for my more modern music video are; fast paced shots, multiple different angles to make the video more immersive, minimum of two settings and a suited narrative.
